Dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors (or gliptins) represent a class of oral anti-hyperglycemic agents that block the inactivation of the incretin hormones, namely glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and thus affect glucose control through several mechanisms, including enhancement of glucose-dependent insulin secretion, slowed gastric emptying, and reduction of postprandial glucagon and of food intake (Scheme 1) [9]
